Mark Hughes has been Professor of Wood Technology at Aalto University (formerly Helsinki University of Technology) since 1.1.2007. Prior to moving to Finland he worked at the BioComposites Centre, Bangor University, UK. He originally studied Mechanical Engineering, graduating from Portsmouth University with a bachelor degree in 1984 and has been involved in wood and bio-based material research since the mid-1990s. His research interests include the mechanics and micromechanics of cellulosic fibre reinforced composites and wood-based materials, however, over the past 4-5 years his research focus has moved more towards the use of wood in energy and resource efficient construction, wood in the circular economy and material-human interactions.
